Dear TRAA Friends and Supporters,
The Torrance Refinery Action Alliance has come a long way in a little over two years, and thank you for helping us in our fight. Our group has played a large part in raising awareness about the dangers of MHF, and now there are two proposed rules currently being reviewed which could result in a a ban on hydrofluoric acid and modified hydrofluoric acid alkylation at California refineries: SCAQMD’s proposed Rule 1410 and AB 1645, introduced by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi.
In order for both of these measures to have the greatest chance of success we need massive public support to help the decision makers understand the concerns of the community. Our experience is that those who learn the truth about MHF generally oppose it strongly, and with good cause!
One way for TRAA to get the word out quickly is to distribute door hangers. We ran a pilot project in January and had almost 5,000 hangers distributed within Torrance and the results showed it was a worthwhile campaign. We are now looking to reach out to the entire South Bay with a campaign of 100,000 hangers. We plan to target areas that (like Torrance) are also at risk from an MHF release.
The hangers can be mass produced fairly cheaply but to distribute them effectively is expensive. This campaign is costly but crucial in the fight against MHF and so we are looking to raise $10,000. We hope you’ll be able to contribute to help us meet our campaign target. Every dollar makes a difference, and with your help we’ll be able to expand the fight against MHF.
