Welcome

Thank you for visiting our site! We hope you will consider joining us at an upcoming meeting.

The Torrance Refinery Action Alliance is a grass roots organization of South Bay residents and business owners. We formed our group after an explosion at the ExxonMobil Torrance Refinery (now PBF Energy’s Torrance Refining Company) on February 18, 2015 rocked Torrance and the surrounding cities, covering us in ash.

Our immediate concerns were related to the composition of the ash that fell on us, the possible health issues stemming from the ash, and the abysmal failure of the warning system.  Some were warned to shelter in place long after the ash fell on them and their property.  Others received no warnings at all, even though they experienced the ash fallout.

After our initial meetings, we became aware that the refinery still uses a form of hydrofluoric acid, an extremely deadly chemical that causes respiratory problems, deep chemical burns, and even death. According to ExxonMobil’s own research provided to the EPA, a release of just 5,000 lb of modified hydrofluoric acid could be lethal to residents within a 2 mile radius, and cause serious, irreversible health damage to those in a 3.2-mile radius. More than 250,000 people live in the affected areas. (See our Maps page for more information.)

We hope you’ll consider joining our group to urge elected bodies to ban the use of hydrofluoric acid and modified hydrofluoric acid in our communities. The risk to public health is simply too great.
